Miscellaneous Rice News

As per a recent communication of Indian Ministry of Agriculture, area under pulses is more than last year; coarse cereals marginally lower; paddy down by 68 LHa

Rice Output Likely To Be Down Due To Abnormal Monsoon - Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said that rice production during this year's Kharif season might be less by about 10 million tonnes due to the less-than-average monsoon in the country.

He said that the shortage in the monsoon might reduce the coverage area of paddy by about 5.7 million hectares resulting in a lower output. He was addressing state food ministers at Delhi.

Pawar said that the country produced nearly 100 million tonnes of rice in both Rabi and Kharif in 2008-09. The output of oil- seeds and sugarcane was expected to be lower, he added and expressed concern over the food grain output in Kharif for 2009-10.

Lower MEP may push basmati rice exports - India's basmati rice exports are expected to surge by 33 per cent during the season starting from October following the government's decision to reduce the minimum export price (MEP).

"Basmati rice exports may increase to 2 million tonnes from 1.5 million tonnes in the last season," Former President of All India Rice Exporters Association Vijay Sethia said. According to official data, India's export of basmati rice was Rs 11,162 crore in 2008-09 fiscal.

Welcoming the reduction in MEP, he said this will ensure reasonable price to farmers and competitive environment in international markets.

The government has lowered MEP to USD 800 per tonne from the present level of USD 1,100 per tonne, Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said last week.

However, the Commerce Ministry is yet to notify the cut in MEP
