Miscellaneous Rice News

Weak monsoon casts shadow over agricultural output - Going by the Monsoon update received from the India Meteorological Department (Met), till June 17, the amount of rainfall that the whole country received was about 54% less than the 10-year average for the corresponding period. Also, for the week ended June 17, of the 36 Met divisions in India, up to 28 received deficient or scanty rainfall during the period, a research note from Emkay Global Financial said.

Although earlier top Met officials maintained that India will receive about 96% of the long-term average rainfall, not many are willing to take a bet on the same. "The delay in the onset of the monsoon and rising El Nino risks do not bode well for  India's farm dependent economy. Monsoon rains determine the fate of summer-sown crops like rice, soybean, sugarcane and cotton.

Rice Procurement Crosses 304 Lakh MT - Rice procurement by the Food Corporation of India has touched a new record with over 304 lakh MT of food grain purchased so far this season, about 18 % more compared to the same period last year.

According to official data, the procurement has reached 304.32 lakh MT till 19 June compared to 258.32 lakh MT in the same period of the previous marketing season (October-September).

India is estimated to have produced a record 98.89 million MT of rice in 2008-09 season against 96.69 million MT in the previous season.

Govt. To Review Export Policy In September - The government of India is likely to take a call on the new rice export policy only after September when the new season begins and the stock position emerges clearly.

Food, PDS and civil supplies minister Sharad Pawar had held wide consultations with traders and exporters over the last fortnight on coining a new rice export policy. It entailed classifying, for the first time, rice for exports not just into basmati and non-basmati, but included a third category, comprising fair, average quality or FAQ variety which is the bulwark of the PDS. The new policy also considered an overall export cap on rice up to around two million MT.

Pakistani Rice Exports Rise - Despite global recession, financial crunch and strong competition in the international markets, Pakistan's rice exports have crossed the $2 billion mark in the current fiscal year.

According to data compiled by the government, Pakistan exported a total of 2.896 million MT rice to different countries in the period from July 1, 2008 to June 27, 2009. Out of the total exports, Pakistan exported 909,709 million MT Basmati rice worth $995,995,749 while 1,987,137 MT non-Basmati rice worth $1,004,243,092 was exported in this period.

Pakistani rice exporters are focusing more on Asian and African markets to increase their exports.

Indian Rice Exports Reduce To 2.5 Mil MT - India's rice export is estimated to have reduced by a half to nearly 2.5 million MT in 2008-09 compared to the same period last year although overseas shipment of the commodity has remained at about the same level in value.

India managed to export 1.5 million MT of basmati in 2008-09, compared with 1 million MT the previous fiscal. However, the export of non-basmati rice slumped to less than one million MT against over 4 million MT in 2007-08 due to a ban imposed last year to contain surging inflation.
