Miscellaneous Rice News

Basmati export likely to dip by 33% - As per the former All India Rice Exporters Association President Gurnam Arora Basmati exports this year are likely to fall to around 8 lakh tonnes from 12 lakh tonnes last year, as the government made shipments expensive by imposing a cess of Rs 8,000 per tonne along with high minimum export price, raising the rice prices for overseas buyers.

Pakistan, which also produces aromatic basmati, has cashed in on the moves, as per the executive director of the All India Rice Exporters' Association, Anil Adlakha.

Saudi govt to buy 1m tons of rice - Saudi Arabia has shown interest in buying one million tons of rice from Pakistan and the government has pushed Pakistan Agriculture Services and Storage Corporation (Passco) in the procurement drive to create exportable stocks.

According to sources in the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Saudi government showed this interest during recent visits of Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and subsequently President Asif Ali Zardari.
