Despite floods and late rains in some parts of the country, there are indications that this year's rice harvest will be better than last year's. Consequently, the government is likely to  allow some special varieties to be exported.

India Rice Planted Area(1 Jun - 25 Sep) Up On Year - India's summer sown area during the 1 Jun - 25 Sep 2008 was 37.97 million hectares, up from 36.73 million hectares a year earlier as per government data.

India expects an estimated 83.25 million metric tons of summer-sown rice output, up from 82.81 million tons a year earlier despite floods and late rains in some parts of the country.

India's summer crop is sown in June and harvested in October, while planting of the winter-sown crop will begin next month.

Govt May Lift Ban On Non-Basmati Rice Exports - The union government is expected to allow export of non-basmati rice. The ban on non-basmati rice was temporarily imposed in April 2008 to maintain proper supply of rice in the domestic market and to ease inflationary pressure.

The union finance minister, P Chidambaram hinted the early removal of ban from non basmati rice.

The government has already allowed export of Pusa 1121 variety of rice.

Prices & Analysis 

Although local markets are steady, due to further weakening of rupee, downward shift is still persisting in export prices. New Crop Paddy arrivals are slowly gathering momentum. Ex Mandi Prices of Pusa Paddy about $ 450/- and Sharbati $ 300/- per tonne.
