India Rice Planted Area(1 Jun - 21 Aug) Up On Year - According to the latest data released by Indian Agriculture department, India's summer rice planted area from June 1-Aug. 21 was 32.46 million hectares, up from 30.36 million hectares during the year-ago period.

India's summer crop is sown from June and harvested during October, and is mostly dependent on monsoon rains for growth.

India Extends Rice Export Ban - The Indian government has decided to extend the ban on exports of rice, wheat and pulses till next April in an effort to keep the staple food grain prices under control.

Pakistan removes MEP on non-basmati rice - The Pakistani government has removed a minimum export price of $750 PMT on non-basmati rice to boost shipments of the grain amid an increase in output.

The minimum export price for Irri-6, a non-basmati variety and the country's cheapest rice, mainly exported to East and West African countries, was set at $750 per tonne.

A top industry official said that after the lifting of minimum export price, Pakistani exporters were likely to offer Irri-6 at between $400 and $450 PMT, FOB.

Rice production in Pakistan is expected to increase 27% to 7 million MT up from 5.5 million MT a year ago.

Pakistan To Overtake India In Exporting Nations List - According to the latest report of the US Agriculture Department (USDA), for the first time in several years Pakistan is likely to pip India in the list of rice exporting countries because of export curb imposed here.

In the USDA list of world's top 15 rice exporting countries, Thailand will remain at the top with an estimated 10 million export followed by Vietnam at 4.7 million MT.

Indian government had banned export of non-basmati rice in April after it found that the system of minimum export price (MEP) was not effective in restricting the shipments.

Prices & Analysis 

Coupled with weakening of rupee, downward shift still persisting in prices. However local market has slightly strengthened after weakening to a new low last month.

New crop paddy arrivals have started. However Exporters/Millers have decided not to buy due to wrong policy guidelines of the Government.
