Miscellaneous Rice News

India's monsoon rains likely to boost oilseed, rice output- India's heavy early monsoon rains have raised hopes of bumper oilseeds and rice crops, which would boost supplies and help tame inflation now ruling at its highest in seven years, traders and analysts said. A good monsoon helps improve soil moisture, lowers irrigation costs, recharges groundwater and encourages farmers to sow early, all factors which point to increased food output.

India's Rice Export Ban to Stay Till October-November-India will review a ban on export of the grain only after assessing the crop prospects for next year, Commerce Secretary G.K. Pillai said. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government banned exports in April to safeguard supplies and slow food-price inflation after rice prices reached a record. Farmers have begun sowing paddy after monsoon rains covered most parts of the nation almost a month ahead of schedule. The monsoon accounts for four-fifths of India's annual rainfall and a normal season may lift output of crops including rice and oilseeds and help cool seven-year high inflation.

Japan Pledges Stockpiled Rice Exports of 300,000 Tons-Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda pledged to export 300,000 metric tons of stockpiled rice to alleviate a global shortage that drove prices to a record and contributed to deadly food riots around the world. Japan is self-sufficient in the grain and has about 1.2 million tons of imported rice stockpiled. It has already received a request from the Philippines for 200,000 tons and one from Sri Lanka for as much as the same amount. Fukuda, speaking at a World Food Security Conference in Rome, didn't say where the stockpiled rice would go.
