Miscellaneous Rice News

Rice millers' group warns of rising prices - Rice millers' group believes rice prices could go even higher if supply tightness continues in 2008 and says businesses will be forced to pass on price increases to the final consumer. Britain, which has a strong appetite for Indian and Chinese food, is Europe's leading rice importer. In recent months, big rice producing countries such as India and China have imposed severe restrictions on exports in order to retain supplies for domestic consumption, while others such as Vietnam and Egypt have banned exports altogether.

Indo-US team develops rice with higher protein content - A team of Indian and American scientists has successfully developed a rice hybrid that will have 12% more protein content - a significant discovery at a time when the government is trying to enhance nutrition levels among the country’s population. Though a host of tests still remain, this will be the largest ever protein boost registered in rice involving Indian varieties, claim scientists involved with the project. The maximum protein increase in Indian varieties range from 5-9%

Riceman gets PadmaShri - He's sown the seeds of a possible second green revolution—by developing a hybrid variety of rice. Sant Singh Virmani has spent most of his working life dedicated to the cause of producing higher yields of rice for the populations of Asia, including India. It hasn’t been easy. Quite apart from the hard work involved in developing the actual product, he’s had to work harder — at convincing reluctant governments, private companies and naysayers, that his belief in the technology was neither impractical nor uneconomical. “I had to struggle for 10-15 years, from 1980s onwards,” says Virmani, former principal scientist at the premier International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Manila, Philippines. But, by the time he retired in 2005, Virmani’s dream had begun to come true. Last year, 2.5 million hectares of land in Asia, outside China, was dedicated to the growth of hybrid rice. Nearly half that land is in India. And, according to Virmani, the Indian Government has committed to adding another 2-3 million hectares in the next five years. In recognition of his work in developing hybrid rice technology, last month, the 68 year old Virmani — now a resident of Plano, Texas — has been honoured with a Padma Shri. In 2005, he was honoured with the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman award.
