Miscellaneous Rice News

White rice evolved 10 millennia ago from wild red variety in Himalayan plains - The white rice that feeds more than half of today's world's population, evolved some 10,000 years ago from wild red rice in the Himalayan plains, according to a recent study published online in PLoS Genetics. Susan McCouch, professor of plant breeding and genetics at Cornell University, and her team has determined that 97.9 percent of all white rice is derived from a mutation (a deletion of DNA) of a single gene originating in the Japonica subspecies of rice. Prof. McCouch and her team found that this predominant mutation is found in the Indica subspecies of white rice.

India monsoon rice planting down, other crops up -  Planting of most monsoon crops in India have risen from a year ago but acreage under rice, the major food grain, trailed, the government said. As on August 17, rice transplantation had covered 27.84 million hectares (68.79 million acres), compared with 28.13 million hectares the same time last year, official data showed. Area under cotton increased to 8.75 million hectares, including 5.33 million hectares under BT cotton, from last year's 8.25 million hectares.
