Miscellaneous Rice News

India's monsoon rain expected to be normal-The India Meteorological Department said it expected rains this year at 95 percent of the long-term average with an error margin of 5 percent, based on a new statistical model to forecast rainfall. The annual June-September monsoon is vital to the economic health of the $885 billion economy because it provides the main source of water for agriculture, which generates more than a fifth of the country's gross domestic product. Farming and related activity provide a livelihood to more than two-thirds of India's 1.1 billion people.

India is all set to export rice seeds to Brazil for the first time - This has been made possible due to efforts made by officials of the Union agriculture ministry alongside Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) who took up the issue with the Brazilian ministry of agriculture, livestock and food supply (MAPA).

Joha rice produced in three districts of Assam is all set to hit the European market soon - The first consignment comprising 17.5 MT was despatched for export to the European markets during the first week of May 2007. The Union Agriculture Ministry has been promoting Joha rice in Lakhimpur, Darrang and Sonitpur districts under a special pilot project covering 154 farmers keeping in view potential in the region. Joha is cultivated in various districts of Assam and of late it has been able to draw the attention of the foreign buyers due its special aroma. Moreover, the consignment is purely organic.
