Cancer fears after
arsenic found in rice grown in US - Scottish scientists have warned
that rice imported from some of America's southern states contains high
levels of arsenic which could cause cancer. Particularly at risk are
Asian, Chinese and Indian communities who consume high quantities of rice
as well as those who eat rice for health reasons, including people with
wheat allergies. It is well-established that arsenic is a carcinogen which
causes cancers at chronic low level exposure, including lung and skin
cancer, but it can also affect fertility and increase the risk of
hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease and impair children's development
by reducing intellectual function.
