Miscellaneous Rice News

Battle against genetically modified rice hots up - From Karnal(in North India) to Coimbatore(in South India), genetically modified (GM) crops are becoming a matter of great concern for Indians worried about safety as well as loss of biodiversity. Various groups in Tamil Nadu, such as Pasumai Thayagam, an NGO supported by the PMK party, Church's Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) and Socio Education Trust, are protesting against GM crops. They have the support of Greenpeace India, Care Earth, Eco-Science Research Foundation, Tamil Nadu Farmers' Technology Organisation, Erode District Organic Farmers' Association and several others that have launched a week-long campaign for a Tamil Nadu free of GM crops. Earlier, about a month back, Greenpeace and BKU activists said the GM rice was persuading the less-educated farmers in the Indo-Gangetic plains to look only at high returns, at the cost of sustainable agriculture and the environment.

Weather causes an estimated $260m loss to Basmati crops in Pakistan - Pakistan has suffered a huge loss of around $260 million owing to severe damage caused by strong winds coupled with rains and fog to the standing paddy of Basmati in the Punjab this season (2006-07). Private estimates put the damage as high as 20 per cent or around 0.4 million MT of the estimated total production of 2 million MT harvested this season. The rapidly changing climatic patterns with rising trend in accumulation of condensed fog during harvesting season of paddy crop is being taken as a major factor for higher damage. On an average there had been 10 to 15 per cent wastage to Basmati paddy due to host of factors but lately with growing problem of fog resulting in higher moisture during the harvesting season the damage ratio has doubled and is likely to grow in years to come.
