Miscellaneous Rice News

Field trials for flood resistant rice - Flood resistant rice, developed this year with the help of genetic engineering, may reach farmers as soon as 2009, helping them cope with global warming and the extreme weather it is expected to bring. Scientists, led by David Mackill at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines, announced in August that they had identified a gene that enables rice to survive for up to two weeks in water. It is regarded as one of the top breakthroughs in rice research this year as flooding causes annual losses of over $US1 billion, with south and southeast Asia the hardest hit. Mackill said they were already conducting field trials in India and Bangladesh and that they planned to extend it next year to Laos, Indonesia, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Rice export to Kenya stopped - Pakistan - Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (Reap) chairman Aziz Maniya said that rice exports to Kenya was on the halt due to stringent standard and quality checks being conducted by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KBS). In a statement, he said that standard applied by the KBS is originally for Kenya Pishori rice which is a product of an Indian basmati family seed and it should not be applied on Pakistani Irri-6 which is mostly imported by Kenya. He further said that the KBS has nominated a PSI (Pre-Shipment Inspection) company to monitor quality of rice imported from Pakistan. Aziz Maniya said since third week of November 2006, KBS has started creating hurdles in clearance of rice cargo on one pretext or the other.

He said that rice exporters are meeting the standard accepted the world over, and on the intervention of the Pakistani High Commissioner in Nairobi and the Commercial Consular, things did ease for some time but once again barriers are being created which have started to halt rice exports to Kenya. The Reap chief complained that the KBS is also not accepting Certificate of Conformity (CoC) issued by their own nominated PSI company.

Trade Reporting

Some of the Buyers from Saudi did come to India for purchasing but no deals were executed due to high prices. They are now expected only in March.

Recomendations

Buyers should definitely buy now especially before March. As whenever the deals with the big Buyers of Saudi take place the prices are bound to rise, due to shortage of Basmati crop this year.
