Transplantation Status in North Indian Basmati Belt

75% of Transplantation for the new crop (2006-07) in the Northern Part of India where Basmati is grown has been completed. As per reports more Farmers are sowing 1121 instead of Basmati Rice.

United States’ loss is likely to be India’s gain.

An export market of about 3-4 lakh tonne of non-basmati rice has opened up after Japan banned rice imports from US on detection of genetically modified grains in the samples of commercial long-grain rice. The opportunity may turn out to be bigger if EU too initiates similar action since India does not grow any gene-modified variety of rice.

Unapproved, gene-modified rice made by Bayer Crop Science AG, was found in commercial US rice supplies during the 2nd week of Aug 2006 following which Japan, the second largest importer of rice from the US, announced a ban.

European nations to savour Dehraduni Basmati rice

For years together, the people in India have savored the basmati rice of Uttaranchal. And now, the fragrance of this famous rice variety would soon waft out of rice bowls in European countries as well as south Indian states, thanks to a new agreement.

"We will soon be exporting Basmati rice especially Dehraduni Basmati to European nations," said Agriculture Minister Mahendra Singh Mahra.

Satnam Overseas Limited and KRBL have signed the agreement with Uttaranchal Basmati rice growers to buy and market their product in the international market.

Delhi-based Satnam Overseas, having Kohinoor brand rice, has assured to buy organic Basmati paddy at Rs 22.50 per kg and Pusa organic Basmati paddy at Rs 15 per kg while Haryana-based KRBL, which sells rice under the brand name of India Gate Basmati, would procure Basmati paddy at Rs 22.50 per kg.
