India & Pakistan Move Forward to get Joint Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) For Basmati

Consequent to the meeting of Commerce Secretaries of India and Pakistan in the last week of March 2006 - as reported in our last newsletter, India has formed a 'Joint Study Group' for consultation with Pakistan on joint registration of Basmati rice as a geographical indication.

IRRI to Facilitate Gene Revolution

International Rice Research Institute, Philippines (IRRI) is setting up a $1.7-million facility for further research on rice genes and genetically-modified rice and also to train Asian scientists in biosafety measures.

Despite concerns from environmentalists such as Greenpeace that genetically modified crops could harm conventional crops, China, India and the Philippines - have been conducting either research or field trials on GMO rice.

Asian scientists will get practical experience of how to make GMO rice and also get trained in biosafety issues and intellectual property rights at the IRRI's new research facility.

Major Rice Exporting Countries To Strengthen Ties

Trade officials from Thailand, Vietnam, China, Pakistan and India will attend a meeting in Vietnam in June to boost agricultural ties under a cooperation programme to boost the exchange of information on price, production and stock management to stabilise prices. Thailand will propose that Thai rice traders manage warehouses in Vietnam.

In all probabilities WinZip - the software required to unzip the eBook would be preloaded on your computer. If not, it can be downloaded from the net. Click with the left button of the Mouse on the ZIP file you downloaded to extract the executable eBook.

Reading the eBook. Go to the folder where you had extracted the executable file. Click with the left button of the Mouse on the name of the file. Click with the left button of the Mouse on the "Read Book" button. Happy reading.

Downloading one eBook will take about 2 to 7 minutes on a 30 Kbps Internet connection.
