Joint Patent of Basmati Rice by India and Pakistan. In 1997 a U.S. firm had patented three varieties of long-grain Basmati rice, and sold rice under its brand names. This had irked many farmers in India & Pakistan. In a recent communication in Islamabad India's commerce ministry secretary announced that "Basmati rice is from both sides an important issue from international point of view... and we should see to that our interests, both Pakistan and India, are taken care of by adequate protection". The officials proposed that a sub-group of experts
be convened to discuss the matter and suggest steps for the registration of the brand worldwide. The Government has outlined the steps it intends to take to increase export of Basmati rice. These include providing assistance to Indian exporters for undertaking publicity campaign, mounting trade delegations abroad, participation in international fairs, buyer-seller meets and providing financial assistance to exporters for improving quality, packaging and brand promotion The issue of notification of "Super" variety of rice as "Basmati" rice has been recommended to Department of Agriculture & Cooperation for necessary Notification under the Seeds Act 1966.

Paddy arrivals are over. Though there is a slight upward price movement, the prices have remained quite stable. 1121 paddy (Longest Grain of Basmati Paddy) has shot up $300 to $345 in just 1 month. No major trade is reported.
