Government Lab Tests Confirm Indian "Shabnam" and Pakistan's "Super" have identical DNA

The Indian basmati rice exporters are of the opinion that the delay on government's part to notify an "evolved" grade (a hybrid with a natural, area-specific basmati as one of the parents) of Indian basmati as Super has badly hit the sale of Indian hybrid basmatis in export markets, especially in Saudi Arabia and Europe. 

Super, Pakistan's premium evolved basmati, sells twice as much as the Indian evolved variety (Pusa) and fetches $590-600 PMT. Pusa sells for $575-580 PMT. Pakistan exports nearly 0.6 Mil MT of Super. 

Super is widely grown in India as 'Shabnam' and both have identical DNA. Lab tests, including ones by the government, have confirmed this. 

India To Produce 2.5 Million MT More Rice

The Indian government has anticipated a better than previously anticipated production of 130.5 million MT of rice this season, which would be 1.5 million MT above the preceding (September) forecast and 2.5 million MT more than in 2004. 

The government has reported a 4% expansion of the area under the (main) Kharif crop. As the South-West monsoon receded in September, it has been estimated that the seasonal rainfall was 99% of the long-term average in 2005 but its course was erratic with a delayed arrival of precipitation in June, abundant downpours in July, followed by insufficient showers in August. 

Overall, the abundance of rainfall has allowed the replenishment of reservoirs with bodes well for the second irrigated Rabi paddy crop, which will be planted between November and February.

Prices of 2005-06 crops are as under:-

• Sharbati Paddy $ 205 pmt.

• Pusa Basmati $ 270 pmt.

• Basmati Paddy $ 310 pmt.

Paddy arrivals are now at the peak and soon it will slow down.   

No major trade has been reported.

This is the time to buy as arrivals will now start depleting.
