Miscellaneous Rice News

India Maps DNA Of Basmati Rice

Indian scientists are mapping the DNA of basmati rice to ensure that Western corporations do not succeed in patenting and taking it over.

Basmati's long grains and natural scent make it one of the world's most desired varieties of rice. It is one of the Indian agriculture sector's prime exports.

Indian Rice Exports Seen Rising

India's 2005 rice exports are likely to exceed 4 million MT, an executive from the India rice Exporters Association said. Of the 2005 total about 1.1 million MT should be fragrant Basmati rice. India, like Pakistan is expected to start exporting Basmati rice to China next year, with the initial market estimated at about 50,000 MT.

China, a net exporter of rice so far, is set to import more rice in the next few years as higher incomes allow consumers to try out new rice varieties harvested in other countries.
