Miscellaneous Rice News

Seven-Day Weather Forecasts Help Farmers

India's northwestern states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, which had deficient rainfall this season, did well with the aid of seven-day forecasts. The crops like rice did well because farmers in the northwest have access to irrigation and medium-term forecasts helped greatly in planting decisions.

Expectations of Improved Rice Output

As per the Indian Agriculture Ministry rice output in the country is likely to rise to 73.8 Million MT from 71.7 Million MT last season.

Rice has been sown over 33.9 million hectares, up from 33.1 million a year ago, according to the farm ministry. The area under coarse grain this season rose to 22.9 million hectares from 22.8 million.

Basmati DNA Testing Facility By Nov

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda), India will evolve a DNA testing facility for basmati rice exporters, by November in order to comply with the demands of the European importers about the authenticity of the exported consignment.

The proposed facility is to be managed by the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad.

However, in order to distinguish traditional basmati from evolved varieties, India has suggested to the Food Safety Authority of the UK and to the European Commission (EC) that at least one parental line should be traditional basmati and there is a need to provide "contemporaneous documentation" to establish the lineage
