Kharif Sowing Coming To An End, Rice Acreage Up

Kharif sowing in India is nearing completion and for the first time during the season, rice acreage is marginally higher from a year earlier, as per latest government data.

According to the data, total coverage under rice as of 31 Aug was 30.6 million hectares against 29.8 million in the year-earlier period.  Kharif crops are sown in June-July and harvested September onwards. However, due to vagaries of monsoon, sowing of certain varieties of crops continues till end-August. 

Kerala Rice Products Preferred In Gulf 

Kerala are involved in the manufacture of good quality rice and rice products, which are mainly exported to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain.

Price of Basmati Crop Paddy of year 2003-04 is $ 340 PMT inclusive of expenses.

Price of Crop year 2003-04 Raw Basmati Rice has moved up slightly due to depletion of stocks.

Trade Reporting 

Sharbati Paddy of 2005-06 crop has arrived in the market. Its price is prevailing at about  $ 195 pmt.

No major business reported. Exporters are still fulfilling contracts executed prior to Aug/ Sep 2004.

Recomendations 

Not much change in market. Sharbati crop year 2004-05 paddy/rice is fast depleting, hence should be bought earliest.
