Basmati Rice Exports Likely To Cross 1 m.t. 

Basmati export is likely to cross the one million tonne mark for the first time with exports in value terms slated to touch Rs 2,000 crore INR during 2004-05 The basmati export till January this year touched nearly 800000 tonne 

Excellence In Rice Research

Dr B. Mishra, Project Director, Directorate of Rice Research (DRR), has been selected for the Dr Richharia national award for excellence in rice research. 

The award has been specially instituted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), during the International Year of Rice-2004.

Monsoon Forecast  

As per government met forecast, normal monsoons are expected for period starting June 2005.

Price of  New Crop Basmati Paddy is $ 320 PMT inclusive of expenses.

Price of Old Crop Raw Basmati Rice has gone down further to $ 650 PMT ex factory in gunny bags, due to lack of buyers.

Trade Reporting 

Babaker from Saudi Arabia has confirmed the purchase of  about 70000 Mt of Rice 70b/30p at $640 cnf. 

Prices have fallen as exports are very low. Other Saudi Buyers are expected to buy in May/June. This is the first time in the last 5 years that Basmati rice prices have fallen to this level. Buyers are refraining to purchase because of falling buying power by the consumer. They are switching over to other cheaper varieties especially Steam Sharbati.

Recomendations 

As reported during the first week of April, Saudi buyers have already started showing interest in buying and are expected to buy in large quantities during May & June 2005.
