CARI Identifies Paddy Varieties For Tsunami Affected Areas The scientists at Central Agricultural Research Institute have identified two salt resistant varieties BTS 24 and BTS 28 developed last year along with 32 sodium resistant strains as sweet cultivar for shore based farmers. These are planned for tsunami-devastated paddy fields in Andaman and Nicobar islands rendered unfit for cultivation due to high salinity. As Per IARI Rabi Crop Prospects Are Bright As per IARI director Dr S Nagarajan the prospects for the standing rabi (winter) crops are bright. Though there is some decline in the acreage under wheat in some parts of the country. The prevailing fog is good for crops

No large trade reported. Besides old crop Raw Basmati, new crop rice is also available. Arrivals of all Paddy is now in trickles. Due to absence of overseas buyers, prices had shown a slight downward trend but the exporters in full strength are now in the market, with a view that these are rock bottom prices for this season. Hence there is a fresh current in the market.
Now is the correct time to buy as the prices now seem to have reached the lowest level. Arrivals will gradually slow down, whereafter Exporters will have to buy from traders, who will charge their margins.
