Miscellaneous Rice News. 

Rice variety for flood prone areas: Asian Development Bank is to fund 7 research centres in different countries, including India, to develop a variety of paddy that can grow under water for many days. It will be a great boon to farmers in flood prone areas.

Rice with medicinal properties: Njavara Rice - Retail Price USD $ 9/- per Kg - A variety of rice which rectifies the basic ills affecting circulatory, respiratory, digestive systems and treats disorders of nervous system as recorded in ancient manuscripts dating more than 2500 years ago caught the eye and attention of an entrepreneur Keralite farmer N Narayanan Unni who grew 3000 kg of this variety organically and plans to grow it on 8 acres of land.

AP farmers likely to shift from paddy: Due to the shortfall of hydel generation in the state, The Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation has advised farmers to change their cropping pattern.

Grain export subsidy: Grain exporters are optimistic about a favourable policy announcement for WTO-compatible financial assistance to make Indian grain export competitive. India's export subsidy is minuscule compared with that granted by major foodgrains exporting countries.

Monsoon is over and winter is slowly setting in. Harvest is in full swing. 

Analysis

Prices (All prices in USD). 

Price of  New Crop Basmati Paddy is $ 350 PMT inclusive of expenses, which is much higher than expectations. 

Old Crop Basmati Rice prices are ruling at $ 655 PMT for raw and $570 PMT for non- sortexed for sela (Parboiled) ex factory in gunny bags.

Export Prices CNF Gulf Countries. In USD PMT, all prices tentative in 45/50 kg new jute bags (Sortexed)

Trade Reporting.

New crop Pusa and Sharbati paddy arrivals in Mandi are almost at the peak. Arrivals of Basmati Paddy has also started. Prices are still showing a firm trend.

Large quantities of Old Crop Basmati Paddy have been sold in the local market
ranging from $325/- to 360/- PMT.

Only Old Crop Basmati is now available, all other i.e Pusa and Sharbati rice are in short supply. 

Recomendations.

Stocks of Old Crop Basmati are fast dwindling. Buyers needing to buy the same should not wait. 

There is quite a turmoil in the market for new crop as exporters fear a shortage of paddy in the forthcoming days due to a bad crop, hence there is an upward swing in the prices.
