We applaud the determination of the hardy people of Sangrur - Punjab, who despite all odds, not only succeeded in saving their standing crops from diseases, but also improved per hectare yield compared to last year. Large scale invasion of caterpillars and rodents has caused immense damage to paddy fields in Mizoram located in the North East of India, triggering fears of a famine in this area. India has sought help from Australian and Cambodian experts. Analysis It is now confirmed that Basmati Pusa crop has been adversely affected by the erratic behaviour of monsoons this year. There are still no reports of damage to Basmati crop. The quality of the late sown crop may not be good. Prices(All prices in USD). Price of Basmati Paddy is stable at $ 325 PMT ex Mandi (Trading Centers) in gunny bags. Rice prices are ruling at $ 610 PMT for raw and $545 PMT for non- sortexed for sela (Parboiled) ex factory in gunny bags. There has been a spurt in prices of old Pusa Rice by $30 PMT New crop prices are expected to be $ 300 PMT for paddy resulting in $ 565 PMT for raw and $500 for Parboiled. Ex factory. Trade Reporting. 1500 MT of Branded Steam Sharbati rice reported being sold in the local market at $360. 5000 MT Pusa Brown sold to Europe at $ 460 CNF. Expectations. Since no significant demand from foreign buyers is forthcoming, old crop prices are likely to remain stable till November. Recomendations. It still is the right time for buyers short of Old crop to purchase the same, as prices of old crop paddy will surge, if as expected, price of new crop paddy touches $ 300 PMT. Disclaimer.
