Miscellaneous Rice News.

Unseasonal rains lashed North India on 2 & 3 Oct 2004. Its impact on rice crop is not known as yet.

Late withdrawal of rains in southern parts of the country resulted in sowing of rice in almost about 7 million hectare in South India during the second week of Sep 2004.

Government policies in regard to non restoration of subsidies for grain exporters discontinued in August 2003 and restrictions to allow stocks to be lifted from the Central Pool till the end of the rabi season is likely to result in a major shortfall in rice exports compared to last year.

We applaud the determination of the hardy people of Sangrur - Punjab, who despite all odds, not only succeeded in saving their standing crops from diseases, but also improved per hectare yield compared to last year.

Large scale invasion of caterpillars and rodents has caused immense damage to paddy fields in Mizoram located in the North East of India, triggering fears of a famine in this area. India has sought help from Australian and Cambodian experts.
