RICE NEWS YOU CAN USE

(Issue 1 - 31 August 2004)

This  fortnightly  goodwill complementry newsletter has been produced by our specially constituted team of experts who have collected all relevent data pertaining to rice in India and analysed the impact of the same to help you plan  your  rice  purchases better.

Monsoon Plays Truant.

Weather has been very unpredictable during the 2004 monsoon season so far. Rains did not set in at the scheduled time in almost one third of the country. Till  third week of July, there were fears of draught being declared in many parts of the country. However the late onset of monsoons in these areas ultimately  saved the situation. The situation as on date is that most areas  in  North India have also got ample rain specially for the Basmati crop. In the Non  Basmati crop areas, where it was sown and spoiled due to late arrival of rains, the farmers have  switched to sowing Basmati crop. As of now it seems that the total  production of rice  may be more or less equivalent to last years. However the quality of the late sown crop may not be good.

Current Prices.

1. Prices of Basmati Paddy have dropped by USD $ 11/-PMT and may fall further.

2. Rice prices are ruling at USD $ 604/- PMT for raw and USD $ 540/- PMT  for sela (Parboiled) ex factory in Gunny Bags.

3. New crop prices are expected to be USD $ 300/- PMT  for paddy resulting in USD $ 560/- PMT for Raw and USD $ 495/- for Sela.

Expectations.

Old crop prices will remain steady till November as demand from foreign buyers are as yet not forthcoming.

Recomendations.

Buyers short of old crop should cover up now as the prediction of high price of USD $ 300/- PMT for new crop paddy becoming a reality will definitely push up the prices of old crop paddy.
